The University of Hawaii Telecommunications and Information
Policy Group, Social Science Research Institute together with the State
of Hawaii Department of Health, State Office of Rural Health, the
Hawaii Health Systems Corporation, Bay Clinics and the North Hawaii
Community Hospital received notice of a $450,477 award under the US
Department of Agriculture (USDA) Distance Learning and Telemedicine
grant program. The USDA grant will provide 17 rural health care
facilities with high definition video teleconferencing equipment and will
provide the University of Hawaii with the very first high definition video
teleconferencing bridge in the State. The project complements a recent
$4.8 million Federal Communications Commission Rural Telehealth
Broadband Pilot Project awarded to the University of Hawaii and
collaborating partners to expand the much needed telecommunication
infrastructure to improve access to telehealth programs.
