Dr. Norman H. Okamura, Director of TIPG, participated as a panelist in the World Summit on Information Society Thematic Meeting: Ubiquitous Network Conference in Tokyo, Japan. Dr. Okamura gave a presentation the in a session entitled, “Knowledge Sharing and Capacity Building.”

Two Asia Pacific Initiative courses were launched involving eight educational institutions of higher learning, including: University of Hawaii, United Nations University, Keio University, Ryukyus University, University of the South Pacific, National University of Samoa, Asian Institute of Technology, the Energy Research Institute and Aoyama Gakuin University. The course topics are: Sustainable Development and Disaster Management and Humanitarian Assistance. There are approximately 45-registered students in each class and classes are conducted via interactive video teleconferencing. The University of Hawaii TIPG/PEACESAT serves as the Secretariat for coordinating the collaborative. The courses were launched on September 27 and 28, 2006.
IIn May 2006, the UH TIPG was awarded a grant from the Sasakawa Pacific Islands Nations Fund (SPINF) to support Pacific Island student participation in the University of Hawaii Telecommunications and Information Resource Management (TIRM) Program. The grant is for three years and it covers the tuition for one student from each Pacific Island entity each year. The planning and candidate selection process started in June. Numerous TIRM meetings and interviews were held via video conferencing system. The program is delivered completely by distance learning to the participants in a 10-month period. The curriculum of the TIRM Program incorporates topics on ICT and information resource policy, planning, technology systems, regulation and management.
